Die komfortabelste Kombination: Thunderbolt 4 überträgt hohe Auflösungen und schnelle Daten gleichzeitig.
Der Dell UltraSharp U2724DE bietet WQHD mit 120 Hz, Thunderbolt 4 mit 90 Watt und 2,5 Gigabit-LAN – dazu einen KVM-Switch für einen zweiten Rechner.
Das ist eine ziemlich rund Ausstattung – und dafür eine Empfehlung für anspruchsvolle Anwender.
WQHD mit 120 Hz, Thunderbolt 4 und 2,5 Gigabit-LAN - ein durchdachter Dock-Monitor fürs Büro, dessen 90 Watt für sehr leistungsstarke Notebooks allerdings knapp werden können.
Mehr Auflösung und Ladeleistung hat der Dell UltraSharp U2725QE (gelistet bei Amazon): 4K mit 120 Hz, Thunderbolt 4 mit bis zu 140 Watt und ebenfalls 2,5 Gigabit-LAN. Mit 4K, Thunderbolt 4 (100 Watt) und 2,5 Gigabit-LAN inklusive Wake-on-LAN ist der Philips 27B2U6903 (gelistet bei Amazon) eine weitere Alternative.
Für große Schreibtische darf man einen Blick auf den Lenovo ThinkVision P40WD-40 werfen – der hat 40 Zoll und 5K2K-Auflösung (5.120 x 2.160 Pixel), Thunderbolt 4 mit bis zu 140 Watt und 2,5 Gigabit-LAN.
Großer 5K2K-Dock-Monitor mit Thunderbolt 4, bis zu 140 Watt, 2,5 Gigabit-LAN und KVM-Switch - beim Umschalten zwischen den Eingängen kann die Netzwerkverbindung kurz abreißen.
Thunderbolt 5 mit LAN
Mit Thunderbolt 5 und LAN-Anschluss sind bislang nur wenige Monitore erhältlich. Einer davon ist der LG UltraFine 40U990A-W.
Geboten werden 40 Zoll, 5K2K mit 120 Hz, 2,5 Gigabit-LAN, 96 Watt Ladeleistung, KVM-Switch und ein Thunderbolt-5-Ausgang zum Durchschleifen eines zweiten Monitors.
Einer der ersten Monitore mit Thunderbolt 5 und LAN-Anschluss - 5K2K mit 120 Hz und KVM-Switch, das Netzwerk läuft allerdings nur mit Gigabit statt 2,5 GbE.
USB-C mit LAN
Wer kein Thunderbolt am Laptop hat, oder die hohe Bandbreite nicht benötigt, schaut besser gleich nach einem USB-C-Monitor. Die sind günstiger.
Und auch ohne Thunderbolt gibt es schnelles LAN.
Der AOC Q27P4CV kombiniert WQHD mit 120 Hz, USB-C mit 96 Watt, 2,5 Gigabit-LAN und zwei Upstream-Anschlüsse für zwei weitere PCs.
Vergleichsweise günstiger Dock-Monitor mit USB-C (96 Watt), 2,5 Gigabit-LAN und zwei Upstream-Anschlüssen - auf Thunderbolt muss man hier allerdings verzichten.
Im 24-Zoll-Format bietet der Lenovo ThinkVision P24QD-40 (gelistet bei Amazon) WQHD mit 120 Hz und 2,5 Gigabit-LAN. Bis zu 140 Watt Ladeleistung gibt es. Mit 4K und 100 Hz, USB-C mit 90 Watt und Gigabit-LAN ist der Dell P2725QE (gelistet bei Amazon) eine weitere solide Büro-Wahl.
Zwei Rechner, ein Monitor
Für den Wechsel zwischen Firmen-Notebook und privatem Rechner eignen sich Monitore mit zwei USB-C- oder Thunderbolt-Upstreams und KVM-Switch.
Beide Rechner lassen sich so anschließen und über denselben Monitor mit Tastatur, Maus und Netzwerk nutzen.
Wer nach der Arbeit regelmäßig umstöpselt, um z.B. auf dem privaten Laptop an einem Hobby-Projekt weiterzuarbeiten, weiß, wovon ich rede.

So funktioniert der LAN-Anschluss im Monitor
Technisch steckt hinter der RJ45-Buchse ein Netzwerkadapter, der am USB-Hub des Monitors hängt. Für den PC verhält sich das wie ein externer USB-Netzwerkadapter.
Deshalb braucht es eine USB-Verbindung zum Rechner – per USB-C, Thunderbolt oder USB-B. Wird der Monitor nur über HDMI oder DisplayPort angeschlossen, bleibt der RJ45-Port ohne Funktion.
Treiber sind meist nicht nötig, Windows und macOS erkennen den LAN-Adapter im BIldschirm in der Regel automatisch.
Häufig stecken Chips von Realtek dahinter (etwa RTL8153 für 1 Gbit/s oder RTL8156 für 2,5 Gbit/s). Einige Hersteller wie Dell bieten für ihre Monitore zusätzlich eigene Treiber an.
Wichtig ist auch das Kabel: Ein einfaches USB-C-Ladekabel mit USB 2.0 überträgt kein Bild. Für den Dock-Betrieb braucht es ein hochwertiges USB-C- oder Thunderbolt-Kabel.
Verlängerungen sind grundsätzlich nicht empfehlenswert – siehe USB-C-Verlängerung.

Langsames Netzwerk mit USB 2.0
USB-C hat vier schnelle Leitungspaare. Bei hohen Auflösungen nutzt der DisplayPort-Modus alle vier für das Bild – für den USB-Hub des Monitors bleibt dann nur noch USB 2.0 mit 480 Mbit/s.
Den teilen sich alle Geräte am Hub, auch der LAN-Port. In der Praxis sind dann nur noch rund 250 bis 350 Mbit/s drin – selbst wenn der Monitor 2,5 Gigabit-LAN bietet.
Für Videokonferenzen und Büroarbeit reicht das meist. Bei großen Dateien oder Zugriffen auf ein NAS macht sich die Grenze aber deutlich bemerkbar.
Manche Monitore bieten deshalb einen Umschalter im Menü, bei Dell etwa „USB-C Prioritization“ mit den Optionen „High Resolution“ und „High Data Speed“. Im zweiten Modus nutzt das Bild nur zwei Leitungspaare, und der Hub läuft mit schnellem USB 3.x.
Wer keine Lust auf solche Kompromisse hat – da muss dann in der Tat Thunderbolt 4 und 5 her, denn da gibt es genug Bandbreite.
Die Auswahl an Monitoren mit Thunderbolt ist jedoch geringer und die Preise fallen höher aus.
1 Gbit/s oder 2,5 Gbit/s?
Für Büroarbeit, Streaming und Videokonferenzen reicht Gigabit-LAN völlig aus – netto sind rund 940 Mbit/s möglich.
2,5 Gigabit-LAN lohnt sich bei einem Internetanschluss mit mehr als 1 Gbit/s, bei einem NAS im Heimnetz und beim regelmäßigen Kopieren großer Dateien.
Voraussetzung ist, dass Router oder Switch ebenfalls 2,5 Gbit/s unterstützen und der Monitor nicht auf USB 2.0 für den Netzwerkverkehr zurückfällt.
Zwei PCs am Monitor: KVM-Switch und LAN
Viele Dock-Monitore haben einen KVM-Switch. Er schaltet Tastatur, Maus und USB-Hub zwischen zwei Rechnern um – etwa zwischen Firmen-Notebook und privatem PC.
Ob der LAN-Port dabei mitwechselt, ist von Modell zu Modell unterschiedlich. Beim Dell UltraSharp U4025QW lässt sich im Menü festlegen, ob das Netzwerk dem KVM-Switch folgt, ob nachgefragt wird oder ob es manuell umgeschaltet wird. Andere Dell-Modelle ordnen den Port per „RJ45 Lock“ fest einem Rechner zu.
Bei anderen Monitoren wandert das Netzwerk automatisch mit – für den Rechner, der in den Hintergrund geschaltet wird, ist das wie ein gezogenes Netzwerkkabel. Laufende Downloads oder VPN-Verbindungen brechen dann ab.
Vor dem Kauf lohnt deshalb ein Blick ins Datenblatt oder Handbuch. Es ist empfehlenswert gezielt nach Begriffen wie „RJ45 Lock“ oder dem Ethernet-Verhalten im KVM-Kapitel zu suchen.
Für die Firmen-IT: MAC-Adress-Pass-Through, PXE und Wake-on-LAN
In Unternehmensnetzen sind einige Zusatzfunktionen wichtig. Mit MAC-Adress-Pass-Through gibt der Monitor die MAC-Adresse des Notebooks weiter, sodass das Netzwerk das Gerät wie gewohnt erkennt – etwa für Zugriffsregeln oder feste IP-Adressen.
PXE erlaubt den Netzwerkstart, etwa für die automatische Installation von Betriebssystemen, und Wake-on-LAN weckt den Rechner aus der Ferne.
Diese Funktionen bieten vor allem Business-Monitore von Dell und HP. Ob sie im Zusammenspiel funktionieren, hängt aber auch vom Notebook und dessen Energiesparzustand ab.
Monitor mit LAN am Mac
Am Mac funktioniert der LAN-Port in der Regel ohne Treiber, garantiert ist das aber nicht bei jedem Modell. Ein Blick in die Kompatibilitätsangaben des Herstellers lohnt sich.
Eine Einschränkung betrifft die Verkettung mehrerer Monitore: macOS unterstützt kein DisplayPort-MST. Über den DisplayPort-Ausgang eines Monitors lässt sich am Mac daher kein zweiter Bildschirm als eigenständiges Display betreiben – mit Thunderbolt-Monitoren dagegen schon. Monitor mit LAN oder separate Dockingstation?
Ein Dock-Monitor spart ein zusätzliches Gerät und Kabel auf dem Schreibtisch. Eine separate Dockingstation bleibt dagegen erhalten, wenn der Monitor getauscht wird, und bietet oft mehr Anschlüsse bis hin zu schnellerem LAN.
Wer ohnehin einen neuen Monitor anschafft, ist mit einem Dock-Monitor meist gut bedient. Für bestehende Monitore bleiben Thunderbolt 4-Docks, Thunderbolt 5-Docks oder USB4-Docks die bessere Wahl – und wer nur das Netzwerkkabel braucht, greift zum LAN-Adapter für USB-C.
Häufige Fragen zu Monitoren mit LAN-Anschluss
Wofür ist der LAN-Anschluss am Monitor gut?
Er macht den Monitor zur Dockingstation: Das Notebook bekommt über ein einziges USB-C- oder Thunderbolt-Kabel Bild, Strom, USB-Hub und eine kabelgebundene Netzwerkverbindung. Das ist vor allem bei Notebooks ohne eigene LAN-Buchse praktisch.
Funktioniert der LAN-Port auch über HDMI oder DisplayPort?
Nein. Der LAN-Port hängt am USB-Hub des Monitors und braucht eine USB-Verbindung zum Rechner, also USB-C, Thunderbolt oder USB-B. Über HDMI oder DisplayPort allein kommt kein Netzwerk an.

Hallo, soweit ich das sehe, gehst du auf bestimmte Details nicht ein. Für mich wäre es wichtig, auf jeden Fall zwei USB C Upstream Anschlüsse zu haben, am besten beide mit Strom und auf jeden Fall Ethernet und hier wiederum am besten beide als passiver Switching Hub. Da gibt es einige Möglichkeiten, z.B. den Dell UltraSharp U2722DE.
USB-C PD an beiden Upstream-Ports, da wird es dünner. Hast Du weitere Anforderungen (Einsatzgebiet für den Monitor)?
